As champions in the Provincial Statistics Quiz, the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) (tertiary and secondary levels) represented Ilocos Norte in the Regional Statistics Quiz held at the National Economic and Development Authority, San Fernando City, La Union on October 16, 2006.

In the tertiary level, the team composed of three students of MMSU-Batac hit the crown as they scored three (3) points higher than their strongest opponent, the team from La Union province. Dr. Edgar Adina, their coach, is very proud to say that even the team is composed of all first year college students, they still emerged as champions. “We selected these students, instead of getting from higher year levels, to prepare them for the forthcoming Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ). That would be a good preparation for them.”  It can be noted that the PSQ is for first year college students only.

On the other hand, the team from Ilocos Norte for the secondary level, who came from MMSU-Science High School, Batac emerged as second place by a difference of only one (1) point.  Dr. Consolacion Bagayas, their coach said, “This may not be their time.”  It is worth to remember that the MMSU-Science High School has won most of the time the top position since the start of the statistics quiz.

The team from the tertiary level is composed of Maridem Abucay,         Marionne Philbee Tejada and Gerald Buduan while the secondary level is composed of Christine Mae Bersalona (BS Accountancy), Vincent Luis (BS Math) and Frances Angelie Calubaquib (BS Accountancy).

The statistics quiz, a yearly competition and a major highlight in the celebration of the National Statistics Month is composed of general knowledge/concepts, problem solving, personalities, and current events in statistics.  This is geared towards instilling the value of statistics and improving statistical awareness among the students.
